Tinea cruris, also known as crotch itch, crotch rot, Dhobi itch, eczema marginatum, gym itch,jock itch, jock rot, scrot rot and ringworm of the groin is a dermatophyte fungal infection of the groin region in any sex, though more often seen in males. In the German sprachraum this condition is called tinea inguinalis (from Latin inguen = groin) whereas tinea cruris is used there for a dermatophytosis of the lower leg (Latin crus).

Tinea cruris is similar to, but different from Candidal intertrigo, which is an infection of the skin by Candida albicans. The latter is more specifically located between intertriginous folds of adjacent skin, which can be present in the groin or scrotum, and be indistinguishable from fungal infections caused by tinia. However, candidal infections tend to both appear and with treatment disappear more quickly. It may also affect the scrotum.

Symptoms and Complications of Tinea Cruris (Jock Itch):

Tinea is often painful or itchy, but not in every case. There are visual clues to help identify a fungal infection. These include:

Inflammation of the groin, anal area, and upper thigh – not including the genitals themselves
slightly raised patch
sharp borders
expanding or spreading, with clearing in the center
dry or scaly blisters (occasionally oozing or crusting)
abnormally dark or light skin
skin redness or inflammation
Fungal infections often spread out in a circle, leaving normal-looking skin in the middle. At the leading edge of the infection the skin is raised, red, and scaly.

Affected areas may appear red, tan, or brown, with flaking, rippling, peeling, or cracking skin.

The acute infection begins with an area in the groin fold about a half-inch across, usually on both sides. The area may enlarge, and other sores may develop. The rash has sharply defined borders that may blister and ooze.

How to Get Rid Of Skin Rashes – Skin Rash Treatment

Skin rashes are characterized by red skin and itching, often accompanied by minor bumps or other changes in skin color, appearance or texture. They can occur on any part of the body or be widely distributed on large portions of the skin.

This minor but irritating problem is often caused by problems such as eczema, psoriasis, allergies, insect bites, mites, acne, excessive sweating or contact with certain poisonous plants such as poison ivy or oak. Soaps, detergents, shampoos or cosmetics that do not fit your skin can also lead to rashes.

1. Olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil works as a great moisturizer for the skin to facilitate healing and promote skin renewal as it is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. It will also relieve your skin and reduce itching.

Simply rub the extra virgin olive oil or a combination of equal parts of olive oil and honey into your rash a few times a day until it heals completely.
Alternatively, you can add some turmeric powder to some olive oil and apply it two or three times a day for a few days. Filled with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric relieves rashes and relieves itching.

2. Baking soda

Baking soda helps to dry out rashes. In addition, it relieves the itching and inflammation associated with rashes.

Add one part of baking soda to three parts of water. Apply the mixture to the affected area. Leave on for a few minutes before rinsing. Do this once a day for a few days.
You can also mix baking soda with a little coconut oil to make a paste and apply it on your rash. Leave on for about five minutes and then rinse. Repeat this once or twice a day until you see improvements.

3. Aloe Vera

Due to its anti-inflammatory, emollient, antibacterial and antifungal properties, aloe vera is excellent for treating a number of skin ailments including rashes. Apart from healing, it also soothes the skin, relieves itching and reduces redness.

Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe leaf.
Apply to affected area.
Leave on for at least 20 minutes and then rinse.
Do this at least three times a day until the rash clears.

4. Apple cider vinegar

Raw and organic apple cider vinegar is another excellent home remedy for the treatment of rashes and soothing itching. In addition, its acetic acid content helps fight skin infections that could be causing or aggravating the problem.

Dip a cotton ball into the apple cider vinegar and place it in the affected area.
Leave it on for a few minutes, and then remove the cotton ball.
Do this several times a day for a few days or until your rash clears.

5. Neem

Simmer a handful of neem leaves in water for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain the solution and allow it to cool. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and place it in the affected area for at least 10 minutes. Do this a couple of times a day for a few days.
You can also use neem products, such as neem leaf extract, soap, cream or lotion. When applying neem oil, be sure to dilute it with carrier oil or water as it is too strong to use alone.

6. Calendula

Calendula is an excellent herb to soothe skin irritations, rashes, ulcers, eczema, dry skin, wounds and bruises due to its anti-inflammatory, astringent, antimycotic, antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Apply marigold oil to the affected area and leave it on for a few hours.

Alternatively, add a few drops of marigold oil to the bath water and soak for 15 minutes, or use marigold tea as a compress.
You can also apply calendula cream, lotion or ointment a few times a day until the rash is cleared.

1. Baking soda.
Baking soda can come to your rescue in very severe cases of itching. Add 1 cup of baking soda to your warm bath or tub. Now soak in this warm bath for at least 20 minutes. Allow yourself to air dry. This will give you instantaneous relief from itching. You can also make a soft paste with water and baking soda and apply this paste on localized areas especially if the itching is restricted to these places only.

2. Oatmeal.
Oatmeal is very soft and soothing on the skin and gives immediate relief from itching. Take 2 cups of oatmeal and put it in your bath water. Now have a hot and soothing bath. Your itching will subside and you will also feel more relaxed.

3. Lemon juice.
Lemon juice when applied helps to soothe inflamed skin. This is because lemon has anti-inflammatory properties. Just rub the juice of a lemon on the affected area of the skin. You will find that the lemon juice burns but soon the burning will subside and your skin will feel itch free.

4. Basil tea.
Use an aromatic basil tea as a skin wash to help eliminate itching. For this, take ½ ounce of dried basil leaves and boil them in a pint of water. Cover the water to prevent the aroma from escaping. Once the tea has cooled, you can dip a washcloth in this tea and apply it to the affected areas of the skin. Basil has high amounts of eugenol, a compound that acts like a local anaesthetic and reduces pain and itching.
